Music notes: Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and more

Ariana Grande is getting emotional over the fact that her new single, "hate that i made you love me," has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She wrote on Instagram, "thank you all from the bottom of my heart for my tenth number one ! ! ! i simply cannot believe those words. i feel like the most grateful human being alive everyday." She added, "the fierce love and support that you all show is still and will always be unfathomable to me. please just know that there isn’t a day that goes by where i don’t feel it and that it is something that i will never, ever take for granted. i love you and thank you for showing this record such love."

Taylor Swift may well dethrone Ariana from the top spot next week. Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music all reported that she broke streaming records over the weekend with her new Toy Story 5 single, "I Knew It, I Knew You." In the case of Amazon Music, the song had the biggest first 24-hour streaming debut globally for any song on the platform this year. It also broke Apple Music's all-time record for the biggest soundtrack single.

While an *NSYNC song is featured in the musical & Juliet, someone has yet to create a musical based solely around their songs. So what would that look like? When asked by People, JC Chasez suggested a love story called It's Tearing Up My Heart. Joey Fatone suggested, "You could do No Strings Attached but it's all about puppets," which prompted JC to add that it could be "a reimagination of Pinocchio."

Billy Joel is in a New York sports fan state of mind.

The New York Knicks come home to Madison Square Garden Monday night to continue their quest for their first championship since 1973. And since Billy spent 10 years as one of the Garden's most high-profile residents, he's posted a video message on Instagram cheering them on.

"Hi, the New York Knicks," he says. "I've seen a lot of magic happen in this building for many years. But now it's your turn to bring the championship back to the greatest city in the world: New York. Go for it!"

As he and the people surrounding him begin to clap and cheer, we see the words "Knicks in 4!"

On Saturday night, Billy was back home in Long Island, New York, helping to induct his longtime booking agent, Dennis Arfa, into the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. Billy was a surprise guest, and in his speech, he said Arfa was the one who came up with the idea to have him play Carnegie Hall and Yankee Stadium, the idea of him doing the final shows at Shea Stadium prior to its demolition, the idea of him doing co-headline tours with Elton John and the concept of his Madison Square Garden residency.

The induction was part of the Hall of Fame's Billy Joel Symposium, which featured two days of speakers.

In addition, Ariana is now the only artist in history ever to have the first single released from each one of her albums debut in the top 10. Prior to "hate that i made you love me," she hit the top 10 with the following singles:

Watch Madonna dance in a bathroom with Benedict Cumberbatch in new 'Confessions II' film

Madonna (Rafael Pavarotti)

Madonna's new short film, Confessions II, which she premiered at the Tribeca Festival Friday night in New York City, is now on YouTube for your viewing pleasure — and half the pleasure is spotting the celebrity cameos sprinkled into the 10-minute short.

The movie has a loose plotline that involves Madonna being stalked by ninja-looking female paparazzi wearing masks and revealing clothing, holding cameras on poles with bright lights. The action moves from a house, to a field, to a car, to a club, to a bathroom and, finally, to a hotel room, where one of the paparazzi is unmasked as Madonna's daughter Lourdes Leon. She ends the film by saying, "Cut, b****."

The whole thing is set to a handful of tracks from Confessions II: "I Feel So Free," "Good for the Soul," "One Step Away," "Bring Your Love," "Danceteria" and "Read My Lips."

When Madonna first gets to the club, we see Julia Garner — who was supposed to play Madonna in a biopic that was later put on hold — dressed like the Queen of Pop in the "Open Your Heart" video. Sabrina Carpenter also appears to sing with Madonna on their hit duet, "Bring Your Love."

The action moves to the bathroom of the club, which is where the celebrity cameos really get crazy: Among the people dancing, doing scandalous things or watching other people do scandalous things are Kate Moss, Gwendoline Christie, Marty Supreme star Odessa A'zion, Richard E. Grant and Madonna's old pal Debi Mazar, who she name-checks in the song "Danceteria."

The most unexpected cameo, though, is a suit-wearing Benedict Cumberbatch, who dances with Madonna in the center of the action before lipsyncing the line, "Everybody get up and dance!"

'Leading Lady Marmalade': Watch Pink's opening number and 'All That Jazz' at the Tonys

Pink opened the Tony Awards Sunday night in the air — as usual — until Neil Patrick Harris stopped her.

Pink, who was hosting the awards for the first time, performed "I'm Flying" from the musical Peter Pan while dressed as the title character and suspended from the ceiling. Former Tonys host Neil interrupted to joke that the vampires from The Lost Boys musical are the only cool flying people on Broadway.

After singing a couple of notes from other famous Broadway musicals like Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, Pink wrapped her legs around Neil and lifted him into the air while singing Elphaba's battle cry from Wicked. Neil then sent her offstage to change, telling her to return wearing something "more Pink-like, less Pan-ish."

A group of Broadway stars then took the stage and began singing "Lady Marmalade" from Moulin Rouge, a song that reached #1 in 2001 when it was recorded by Pink, Mya, Lil' Kim, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott. Pink reappeared wearing a top hat, fishnets and a pink corset with a massive pink feathered back, joining a version of the number with lyrics rewritten to celebrate Broadway's leading ladies.

Megan Thee Stallion, who appeared in Moulin Rouge! The Musical earlier this year, then joined in with a rap about Broadway, before Pink brought back the "Leading Lady Marmalade" song. At the "more, more, more" lyric, the backup singers sang, "Moore, Moore, Alecia Moore" — a reference to Pink's birth name.

Near the end of the song, Pink sang, "Standing on stage at the Tony Awards/10-year-old me is like, 'Oh my God!'"

Later in the show, Pink participated in a tribute to Chicago, the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, performing "All That Jazz."

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner host wedding bash, serenaded by Elton John

Dua Lipa and her husband Callum Turner hosted a second wedding celebration in Sicily Saturday, after first tying the knot May 31 in London.

Vanity Fair reports the couple wed in Palermo at Villa Valguarnera, an historic 18th century mansion. Elton John, who flew in on a private jet, serenaded the couple with "Your Song" as they said their vows in a gazebo. A wedding banquet followed, featuring local Sicilian specialties, followed by dancing with superstar DJs David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Carl Cox and Peggy Gou manning the sound system.

According to Vanity Fair, the 200 guests included Donatella Versace, Charli XCX, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, actor Joe Alwyn, Mark Ronson and Olivia Dean.

The wedding weekend began June 5 with a party at the Gallery of Modern Art, where guests were treated to a private tour and cocktails, followed by a reception in a local piazza that had been decorated with vintage cars, lights and music. Also part of the decoration was a huge bookcase filled with real books, since the couple first connected over the fact that they were both reading the same book and were "on the same page," literally.

As for why they chose Palermo as the site of the wedding, Vanity Fair reports that Dua and Callum spent several days on vacation in the city last year.

Adam Lambert says new album has both 'heaviness' and 'levity,' chooses fave Pride anthems

Adam Lambert, 'ADAM,' (Nick Knight)

Adam Lambert has, so far, released two very different songs from his upcoming album, ADAM. “Eat U Alive" draws on '90s alternative rock and electronica influences, while "Under the Rhythm," released Friday, is a darker dance song that interpolates a 2000s club classic. Do these two songs represent what the album sounds like as a whole? Well, sort of.

"There is a through line [to the album], but it's interesting because, you know, you start picking singles and it's not necessarily — you know, they're not next to each other on the album," Adam told ABC Audio. Rather than jarring transitions between styles, Adam said, "There is the sequence. There's a flow on the album."

He notes there’s a reason he chose to lead the album with those two tracks. "I guess in terms of trying to find which songs to get out there it was like, I wanted to give people some of the range of the album," he explained.

"Eat U Alive" represents a number of songs pretty well — there's a lot of, like, darker industrial energy on the album, heaviness," he said. "And then there is some levity, you know? There's some danceability, like 'Under the Rhythm.'"

ADAM arrives on July 10.

Meanwhile, Adam shared a few of his personal top LGBTQ anthems in honor of Pride month after Billboard compiled a list of them.

"Ooh, I mean, Sylvester ... 'Mighty Real,' I mean, I did a cover of it for that reason, that's a pretty bold one," he told ABC Audio. "Anything George Michael, I love George Michael. I love, obviously, Freddie [Mercury], I mean, all the stuff I've done with Queen. Those all kind of feel like musicians that I can feel proud of, that I feel like reflect the spirit of Pride."

Ariana Grande kicks off Eternal Sunshine tour with 'Brighter Days Ahead'-heavy set

Ariana Grande Eternal Sunshine tour image (Katia Temkin)

Ariana Grande's long-awaited Eternal Sunshine tour launched in Oakland, California, on Saturday night. And, as its name suggests, the set list was heavy on songs from that 2024 album, as well as tracks from the deluxe version, Eternal Sunshine: Brighter Days Ahead, which came out last year.

All the extra tracks from the deluxe version made it onto the setlist: "warm," "twilight  zone," "past life," "hampstead" and "dandelion." She also performed multiple tracks from the original album, opening the show with "yes, and?" and also performing "supernatural," "the boy is mine," the title track, "we can't be friends (wait for you love)" and "imperfect for you."

Positions, the other album Ariana released since her last tour in 2019, was represented by three songs, including the title track.  Only one song from her upcoming album, petal, made it onto the set list, the single "hate that i made you love me."

As for Ariana's classic hits, fans got to hear "Dangerous Woman," "Thank U, Next," "Break Free," "Into You," "Honeymoon Avenue," her Lady Gaga duet "Rain on Me" and "7 Rings."

According to Rolling Stone, the set design was inspired by the flooded and destroyed house in the Brighter Days Ahead short film. At the end of the concert, she's lifted up towards a set of alien spaceship-looking lights, just like the film.

The tour is set to continue through September.

Adam Lambert takes it back to 2000 with new 'ADAM' single 'Under the Rhythm'

Adam Lambert (Nick Knight)

"Eat U Alive," the first single from Adam Lambert's upcoming album, ADAM, takes its sonic cues from '90s alternative rock. But for his new single, "Under the Rhythm," he's looking back to 2000.

The dark dance tune interpolates ATC's "Around the World (La La La La La)," which came out in November 2000 and hit the top 30 in 2001. There's also a video that features a bizarre-looking Adam held captive in what looks like a mental institution before he breaks out, reverts to his normal self and dances in a darkened space together with a group of other people.

Adam says the song is "about overcoming life’s hardships through the connective and healing power of music," adding, "It encourages the listener to keep pushing forward, one day at a time, one dance at a time, toward joy.”

"It's easier to breath again/ The beat is in my soul/ Now I just need to find a friend/ To take the party home," he sings, describing a night out at the club.

ADAM comes out July 10. Tickets are on sale now for his album release shows, which run from July 10 in LA through July 23 in Berlin, Germany, with stops in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and London.

Watch the video for Taylor Swift's 'Toy Story 5' song

'Toy Story 5' (Walt Disney Pictures)

It's a Love, er, Toy Story — baby, just say yes.

The video for Taylor Swift's new song "I Knew It, I Knew You" from Toy Story 5 has just arrived on Spotify and Apple Music. Taylor doesn't appear in the clip; it focuses on Jessie, Toy Story's cowgirl character. Voiced by Joan Cusack, Jessie inspired Taylor's song.

The clip is edited to focus on Jessie's relationships with Woody, who's like her brother, and Buzz Lightyear, who she has romantic feelings for. It also touches on how she was traumatized after being abandoned by her original kid, Emily, and her joy after her subsequent adoption, first by Andy and then Bonnie, and her love for them.

In the new Toy Story movie, the toys have to fight a new electronic tablet named Lilypad; Bonnie becomes obsessed with it, leaving Woody, Jessie, Buzz and the gang feeling neglected. "First we were playin', then the world started changin'," laments Jessie in the trailer. She also says, "Bonnie still needs us! Our time ain't over yet!"

Toy Story 5 is in theaters June 19.

Barry Manilow says new album 'What a Time' reflects 'where I've been, where I am'

Barry Manilow, 'What A Time' album. (STILETTO Entertainment)

Ahead of his return to the stage, Barry Manilow has released What a Time, his first non-concept album of new, mostly original material in years. And he says for him, the project is a "full-circle" moment.

Barry writes in an Instagram post that the album is "a collection of songs that feel really alive to me right now. They reflect where I've been, where I am... and a lot of what I still want to say."

He goes on to say that the songs also reflect "all the different styles I've loved working in." That's because, he notes, he wanted the album to feel like "a journey. Not just one sound, not just one lane... but a mix of moments."

Barry explains, "That's how I used to make records in the beginning... just following the music wherever it wanted to go. Letting each song be its own thing, but still part of something bigger."

While making What a Time, he says, "I kind of realized... I was doing that again. Same freedom, same curiosity... same love for it. So yeah... in a way, this album really does feel like things have come full circle."

Barry says he's "really proud of these songs," which he describes as "a little bit of the past, a lot of right now... and still looking ahead."

The entertainer is set to start his brief U.K. arena tour June 9 in Glasgow, Scotland, and wrap up June 17 in London. These will be his first major shows since undergoing surgery for lung cancer.

"I’m terrified, and I’ve never felt that way about going back on stage," he told US Weekly. "I really don’t know what’s about to happen. I’ve never been in this situation, so I’m really very nervous about it."

Alex Warren releases 'Passenger,' reveals meaning of new album title

Alex Warren, 'Wildchild' (Atlantic Records)

The meaning of Alex Warren's new album title has been revealed.

Wildchild will be out Aug. 28, and Alex says in a statement, “Growing up, my dad used to call me Wildchild so it’s always had a special meaning and I even have it tattooed on me."

“Creating this album was really healing, therapeutic and a way for me to continue finding out more about myself," he continues. "This album really shows where I am in my life today and compared to my first album which feels like a man who is broken, this one is a man who's trying to heal."

"It’s been really nice to be able to confront those feelings and also be able to share them with the world to give everyone a transparent view into my life.”

In an interview with Hits Radio UK, Alex says the songs on the album can be summed up as, "I hate you, I love you, and I love my wife and I miss you." As he puts it, "I wanted to have at least a song or two for each emotion you feel."

Alex has also released "Passenger," a song from the new album that he's been teasing on social media. In the song's music video, Alex tries everything he can to get a girl's attention — he sings in front of her, shoots off confetti, uses a flamethrower, lifts weights and does magic tricks — but she just keeps on looking at her phone.

Finally, he drives a forklift through the wall, only to see her go off with the guy who was helping him do the magic tricks.

To keep Taylor Swift's song secret, 'Toy Story 5' team created a 'decoy' version of film

Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) in 'Toy Story 5.' (Pixar)

Fans first became aware that Taylor Swift might be involved with Toy Story 5 on April 30, when she posted and then deleted a Toy Story-coded countdown on her website. But the folks behind the movie had been keeping the fact that she wrote a song for the film a secret for months.

As Variety reports, Thomas Jordan, the VFX supervisor for Toy Story 5, took part in a panel in London on Friday, during which he revealed that "a very small group" of people connected with the film knew about the song back in February.

"She actually saw an early version of the film, she requested to see it before it was finished and she wrote the song and then asked us if we wanted it. And we said, ‘Uh, yes! Yes we do,’" Jordan said, as per Variety. "That was in February, so we’ve had to keep it a secret ever since then.”

He also revealed that the "very small group" had to "create a decoy version" of the movie without Taylor's song in it so they had something to show to the Disney/Pixar staff and the press.

“The crew that made Toy Story 5 did not know about this secret until last week,” he said.

The song, "I Knew It, I Knew You," is out now. Toy Story 5, which pits Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the gang against Lilypad, an electronic tablet who takes kids' attention away from good ol' regular toys, arrives June 19.

Sara Bareilles' new documentary, Good Griefcaptures in an emotional and joyous way the making of her upcoming album of the same name. It premiered Thursday at New York's Tribeca Festival, and following the screening, she brought her band onstage to perform some of the new music.

Sara opened with the album's first single, "Home," followed by "Just a Kid," "Still Crying," "Heartland" and "Nervous Breakdown," the latter co-written by her longtime pal Ingrid Michaelson.

On the red carpet ahead of the screening, Sara told ABC Audio that the movie was inspired by a desire to share more openly the grief she's experienced in her personal life. She lost two of her best friends to cancer, and she's also struggled with infertility and her mental health. So she asked her "trusted friend" director Josh Alexander to film the recording sessions.

"I was like, 'Is there something here? If we just go in and make this an experiment, knowing that this might not work, and we might come out with nothing?'" Sara said. "And he really quickly said yes and we got the team together. And I'm so grateful, because it feels like, if I didn't have these days captured, I don't know what I would do."

Onstage after the screening, Sarah said, "The last five years of my life have been a deep excavation of a lot of grief and a lot of joy and a lot of ... faith in the mystery of how things move. But I really hope people come away feeling a little closer to themselves."

"I think the more we can really have grace and compassion for our own pain, we can have it for others and be a sounding board," she continued. "We really, really need each other."

Taylor Swift's 'Toy Story 5' song is 'an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond'

Taylor Swift, 'I Knew It, I Knew You' from 'Toy Story 5' (Walt Disney Records)

Taylor Swift's new original song for Toy Story 5 is here.

The music superstar shared the song, "I Knew It, I Knew You," on social media Friday alongside an adorable video of herself as a little girl, marching around in cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, like the Toy Story character Jessie, whose journey inspired the song.

"Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time. Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once," Taylor captioned the video. "And being a @toystorykid from the age of 5 til now… is an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond."

Taylor noted that she reunited with Jack Antonoff for the song, adding, "We wrote this with so much adoration for these characters that made us laugh and helped us learn lessons and think outside the backyard all throughout our childhoods."

She also shouted out legendary singer/songwriter Randy Newman, whose song "You've Got a Friend in Me" has been featured throughout the franchise. "Thank you to the incomparable @randynewmanofficial for the gorgeous sonic tapestry of songs and scores you’ve meticulously woven over the years," she wrote. "You created the Toy Story musical world, and we are lucky to get to live in it."

The song, which features more organic instrumentation than Taylor's recent work, has her singing, "I remembered I loved you/ Came back when it mattered/ I saw you/ Standing there in the light of the window wearing that same smile/ Man, it's been a while/ But I knew it, I knew you/ I knew it, I knew you."

Toy Story 5 hits theaters on Friday, June 19.

Nick Jonas on 'Power Ballad' role: 'I've lived a lot of these experiences'

Nick Jonas as Danny and Paul Rudd as Rick in 'Power Ballad.' (David Cleary)

In the new John Carney movie Power Ballad, Nick Jonas plays a former boy band member who steals a song from Rick — a wedding singer played by Paul Rudd — and uses it to establish his solo career. Nick said he really wanted work with Carney and Rudd, but took on the role of Danny in the film because he could relate to it on several levels.

"I've lived a lot of these experiences," he told ABC Audio. "And not just the career stuff and the fame aspect of Danny's life, but the songwriting and the journey to find yourself, push the envelope, do something different, the pressure that you can feel."

That pressure is what leads Danny to claim Rick's song as his own. Rick then crashes out, and begins regretting putting his own music career on hold to have a family. Nick says the movie asks the question, "How far would you go to get everything you ever wanted, and at what cost?"

Carney told ABC Audio that he chose Nick because it was important to him to cast an actual musician in the role of Danny.

"He just has stood on so many stages in the world. He walks onto a stage and he just is natural, he knows how it works," Carney said. He added that an actor "can't carry that off as well as a real singer who's been onstage since he was like 6."

As for Rudd, he shows off some very impressive singing and guitar skills in the film. But he didn't look at it as a way to surprise people with his hidden talents.

"I'm always just like, 'Oh God, I hope I don't fall on my face,'" he said. "But I feel that with just about every job I do. ... It's more of just, 'I hope it's believable.'"
